Description: This year is HCLC’s 20th anniversary and as a community we want to celebrate our legacy and students! Horizon Honors students are known for their excellent dedication to volunteer work and what better way to celebrate 20 years of serving the community than by hosting our first Relay for Life event? On February 19th from 6 p.m. to midnight we will join in a battle against cancer. Cancer has impacted many of our lives as individuals and our school community, and it’s time for us to fight back.

Join us in raising awareness and fundraising for the American Cancer Society. The first step is to form a team to walk at the event. You can sign up at our website: relayforlife.org/horizonhonors or at the sign up drive on Tuesday, December 15th from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Community Room. Then as a team, you will be able to start raising money which can be donated through the website. If you cannot join a team, still make an impact by donating to the event online.

This event is open to all ages, with students who are younger than high school age being allowed to participate until 9 p.m. From 9 p.m. until midnight the event will only be open to high school students who have fundraised at least $25. Also, each team of students needs at least one chaperone who is older than 21 years old (a teacher, coach, parent, etc.). Teams can be formed through clubs, sports teams, friend groups, school staff etc. Please help the school start a new service tradition this year and sign up for Relay for Life! NOT SURE WHAT RELAY FOR LIFE REALLY IS….READ ON

    What is Relay For Life?
Relay For Life is a partnership between communities and the American Cancer Society with three goals: Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back. Individuals join teams to fundraise for American Cancer Society beforehand, then the day of the Relay they walk the track to celebrate cancer survivors and what they have overcome, remember those we have lost to the disease and those who are currently fighting, and fight back through funding groundbreaking research, raising awareness, and coming together as a larger community. Relay For Life is a fun service-oriented event where team members take turns walking the track to show our stand against cancer and activities throughout the night entertain and build camaraderie.

NEWS

Lockdown DRILL Held Today

This morning we held a pre-planned lockdown drill. A lockdown is utilized when a threat is known to be inside school grounds. All internal and external doors are locked and community members find a safe place inside a secured room. Students and staff that are outside on our campus leave the campus and move towards a safe, indoor location. Classes at Pecos Park move inside the Pecos Park Recreation Center. Today’s drill lasted approximately 5 minutes and then classes resumed normal activities.

It is important to routinely practice safety procedures with all community members in the event of an emergency situation. Information about the drill is communicated to students in an age-appropriate way, with teachers paying special attention not to alarm younger students…

Relay for Life

As we celebrate our 20th year as a school the Horizon Honors High School Student Council is excited to start a new tradition, Relay For Life. In partnership with the American Cancer Society, Horizon Honors will host its first Relay For Life event on Friday, February 19th from 6 p.m.-midnight. The event will be hosted on-campus and in keeping with the mission of Relay For Life will celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember those we have lost to the disease, those who are currently fighting, and join in the fight through our fundraising efforts. The decision to be a part of the Relay For Life mission came about due to the commitment to service that Secondary students are encouraged to demonstrate and the fact that all of our lives are in some way touched by this disease. As a community, we have felt the effects of it with the loss of our founders to cancer and the many community members who have fought back against the disease or served as a caregiver for a loved one…

Parking Lot Update

Over the past few weeks, I have participated in talks with Mountain Park Community Church regarding the construction timeline. Those talks resulted in an agreement that will allow HCLC to keep approximately 100 of our current parking spaces during construction! In addition, Frye Road improvements will begin this summer (not during March as was previously planned). We will still need to make some adjustments to our parking/traffic plan, but they will be minor compared to what we were facing.  I will provide more information as we get closer to March on any changes. A big thank you to all the families who participated in the Parent Parking Forums. Those meetings produced some great ideas that we can use in our future planning. Finally, HCLC will be having the parking lot treated to control dust this weekend.  Everyone can help control dust by driving at a safe speed through the parking lot to avoid dust complaints and possible citations for the school. Thank you for your continued support of HCLC! Betsy Fera HCLC Executive...
