Teaching Staff

PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM
This unique program is designed for those students turning four by August 31st, 2006 who are eager to learn and build confidence in their academic skills in an individualized, caring and developmentally sensitive class.

Instructor Mr. Andrew Creighton Harank is an accomplished educator with more than 25 years of teaching experience. Before moving his program to HCLC in 2001, Harank served as a kindergarten teacher for the Kyrene School District for 20 years. Mr. Harank has received such awards as the Distinguished Educator, Who's Who Among America's Teachers, The Silver Apple Award (a student nominated award), and a nomination for Disney's American Teacher Award (also student nominated).

Pre-Kindergarten is designed and taught to prepare the students to move on to Kindergarten the following year. The 2007-2008 program requires a fee of $3,200.

KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM
For the 2007-2008 school year, Horizon offers both half-day and full day kindergarten classes for students turning five on or before August 31st. Within a developmentally appropriate and nurturing environment, teachers focus on the social, emotional and academic needs of kindergarten students. All students are grouped within the classrooms according to their level of ability.

In the half-day program, Reading and Math is emphasized, and the children study different themes each quarter to enhance their learning.

In the full-day program, students' Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science themes are reinforced with additional experiences in Spanish, P.E. and Music.

FIRST THROUGH FOURTH GRADE PROGRAM
HCLC clusters both first and second grade students and third and fourth grade students together in the classroom. Clustering students for two years enables HCLC to provide a greater degree of continuous academic growth on an individual student basis and to also deliver a leadership and character-building program. Generally students spend both years with the same teachers allowing for the opportunity for the students, parents and teachers to build close, personal relationships. Students also receive instruction in physical education, Spanish, music and technology.

Each day ends with all students participating in a project group activity within their teams. The project group curriculum, often focusing on science or social studies, heightens the importance of learning by allowing the students to use what they learned that day in their academic classes. Students will work on projects solving real-life problems and then present it to their parents and the community in a summative event at the end of each quarter.

The academic focus for the primary school is to provide the basic foundation for learning in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics. There is also a strong emphasis on values, learning to think and leadership skill development.
