HCLC Celebrations

As we end the first quarter, we have so much to celebrate at HCLC! Our students continue to reach their potential and do their best each day. We could not be prouder of all their successes. Before we enjoy Fall Break, I wanted to share the 2011 ACT, SAT, and AP scores. We just received all the final results and the scores are beyond impressive! Our students tested well above the Arizona, national, and global averages. Although these are student accomplishments, these scores also validate that HCLC teachers are working their hardest to prepare our students for a global work environment after high school. Congratulations to our students and our teachers! Have a restful and safe Fall Break! Betsy Fera HCLC Executive...

2011 PSAT

What is the PSAT? The PSAT is a practice SAT test. The scores are not mailed to colleges, so students utilize this test to determine their strengths and weaknesses in order to better prepare for the SAT test. Students will receive their scores and test booklet in mid December at school. The worksheet gives the student’s responses and the correct answers so students can study to prepare for the SAT test. Who Takes the PSAT? • Generally speaking, the test is targeted to Juniors. These students go on to take the SAT or ACT test in the spring of the junior year, to allow time for college applications in the fall of the Senior year. • Juniors who perform overall in the 99th percentile may qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. • Sophomores and Seniors  take the PSAT for additional practice, although there is no scholarship competition at those grade levels. Where and When: • Wednesday, October 12th • Larry Pieratt Activity Center • 8:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. (approx. times). Arrive at 8 a.m. Where Do I Sign Up? • Pay in the Main Office by September 23th to hold your spot. • Make checks to HCLC. HS & MS: Tips for a Successful School Year

• Ask a few simple questions each day: Do you have paper, pencil, and your other school supplies? Did you eat breakfast? Do you have something for lunch? Are you in dress code? • Establish open lines of communication – parent – student – teacher. • All staff e-mail addresses are available on the HCLC Website • Sign up for an ILP (Individual Learning Plan Conference) by calling (480) 659-3000 or stopping by the Main Office. The first conferences are August 11 and 12. Actively participate in the ILP Conference and set goals together. • Use PowerSchool as a tool – Check it regularly to monitor student progress, assignments, grades, and class information. • Watch out for missing assignments – all teachers have a late policy in their syllabus and students have a very small window in which to turn in late work – “catching up” the last two weeks of the quarter is not possible. • Read the weekly Horizon Honors e-mails to stay up to date on school news and events. • Encourage your student to “Get Involved” – there are many opportunities • “Get Involved” yourself! Parent involvement has a direct link to student success.   Let’s make it a great school...
